Ethicist seeks law to say when dead is truly dead Posted: 4 months ago by Bingo
A new trend to harvest transplant organs from people whose hearts have just stopped - but may not be yet brain dead - has underlined the "pressing need" for federal legislation to define exactly when someone has perished, a leading medical ethicist argues.

One way to solve the problem with not enough organs available for the very small percentage of people who need one, is to allow the selling of organs.
Yes, there would need to be safe guards in place I suppose, but the benefits would far far outweigh any risks

I'm not agreeing with you here.

We had a debate about that in public speaking class. If the Government actually had money to spend, they could offer stipends or other funds that hospitals could use to buy organs with. That way the treatment is done right in the hospital, there is no middle man and the the organs are right there for the hospital to use. They are very safe with the blood supply so I imagine they'd know how to deal with organs as well.

Paying for organs would be okay unless it was not passed to the people needing transplants. It's a slippery slope to go down.

« gammerus : exactly, then paranoid people me wouldn't have to fear people harvesting their organs should they fall into a coma. Of course, once they start harvesting organs it becomes somewhat moot as to whether you were dead or in a coma.
True story - I used to have a fear of waking up in a coffin after having been mistakenly buried alive.
I've recently agreed to donate my brain for research purposes and suddenly that fear has gone away.

This whole concept makes my skin crawl. I'm a registered organ donor but I don't like to think about the actual process. Hopefully I'll be pulled out to heaven long before anyone gets around to slicing me open. I'm all for helping people as long as I don't have to be around for the process of having my internal organs removed.
