Crisis feared as U.S. water supplies dry up
Crisis feared as U.S. water supplies dry up
An epic drought in Georgia threatens the water supply for millions. Florida doesn’t have nearly enough water for its expected population boom. The Great Lakes are shrinking. Upstate New York’s reservoirs have dropped to record lows. And in the West, the Sierra Nevada snowpack is melting faster each year. picked by dollyllama 12 months ago

My Mom and Dad live in Georgia. Their house is only 5 minutes from Lake Alatoona, which they drain every November. The lake has no water in it right now, no need to drain it. My Mom was saying that they are shipping their water to Florida, in some cases to save the mussels. Environmental groups who think their cause is more important than saving people are being very self-centered. I am not saying they are causing the drought but they need to see the bigger picture.

Pray for rain. Hope for rain. Believe rain will come. Whatever it is you do. Think rain. Do a rain dance. In our travels across the country we saw the Mississippi river, and you could see how it looked like it had receded.

When humans become an endangered species (by something other than their own doing), I'll feel more pity.

Lake Lanier is a man made lake dammed up from a river that flows to Florida. The water is not "shipped" to Florida. People need to conserve water, not just when there's a drought but always, that would help prevent such dire conditions.

By the admission of the governor of Georgia, when the drought first became obvious and restrictions put in place, people were still watering their lawns and washing their cars (and who knows what else).

Those are the people to shake a fist at.

I whole-heartedly agree with Dolly (there is a first time for everything). I have lived in Texas when there were water restrictions in place. Some people believed they were suggestions and not requirements. Fortunately, the police were very responsive as there were punishments and fines in effect for people not adhering to the restriction.

Praying for rain (even if it worked) wouldn't be enough. You could have rainy days for a month of Sundays and there would still be a water problem.

Pray for knowledge, hope people will realize that aquifers are not unlimited sources of fresh water. The Ogalalla aquifer is going dry - rain can't fix that problem in our lifetimes. Pray people will realize that green lawns don't really belong in the desert, and that old and out-dated methods of irrigation are .... old and out-dated.

As for the Mississippi - that poor river has bigger problems than water volume; diversion and damming haven't made life easy for it at all!
