World's Most Powerful Laser
World's Most Powerful Laser
The laser's output tops a petawatt, which is a quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) watts of power.

The university should be on the look-oot for a purple/green haired individual hell bent on stealing this. picked by punthe 4 months ago

Scientists have switched on the world's most powerful laser, which for one-trillionth of a second is 2,000 times more powerful than all the power plants in the United States. The laser's output tops a petawatt, which is a quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) watts of power.
So much for energy conservation. Don't forget to turn that bad boy off before you leave the room!

The actual laser pulse will come out of the round hatch seen at the left of the chamber, where it will be directed at a target to mimic a nuclear explosion or an exotic dense star.
...or do some other entirely unexpected crap - like end the world, travel through time, raise the dead, or prevent plime from ever crashing again.

The wattage is extremely high, but the pulse duration is so small that the total energy output is about that consumed by a household lightbulb for a couple of seconds.
