The motoring giant Volkswagen has defended a controversial television advertisement which shows a dog cowering and shaking.
The 30-second advertisement features a Jack Russell happily "singing" in the front seat of a car with apparent "Polo confidence".
A video of the advert is on-site if you haven't seen it. 286 complaints, wtf is wrong with some people!

This is such bulls**t on so many levels. We've got a Jack Russell that sits in exactly the same way when she's relaxed and falling asleep, she even gives the occasional shiver.
Do people not also understand that dogs are trained to look and act a certain way for numerous films and adverts.

my first dog was a russell :> Lol, they do look pretty pathetic when they do it. Mine does it while she's falling asleep standing up then falls over when she eventually drops asleep.

At first I didn't understand the advert anyway (I know, I'm a bit thick!) but my wife was concerned about the dog as we have always had dogs and we have never seen them 'shiver' but I suppose they could be trained - don't know how though.

It's predominantly a Jack Russell trait. Because we've got a JR I've asked our vet about it before and he says it's because she's a wimp, lol.
She shivers sometimes while she's falling asleep, when she's excited and a variety of other occasions. Mostly I think she does it to keep us guessing. ;)
Volkswagen have pulled the advert now because of the RSPCA complaining about it, apparently they don't know a lot about animals :(
I wonder if the same people and the RSPCA get all outraged when they see a dog "die" in a film. It's hard to believe that people are so naive to animal training and natural behavior.

I didn't even get the scared vibe from the dog. When I saw the ad I just saw a dog that was hiding the fact that he was singing and trying to look inconspicuous.
It's because of crap like this that I am scared to have my dog around other people/pets/places. Just too many people looking for an excuse to cry wolf.
