Try to stay awake.
The study (Ironic effects of sleep urgency) found that trying to stay awake as long as possible can have the opposite effect and help people fall asleep.
This is just a cruel joke by the higher powers that be.

•1Don't worry about not getting enough sleep.
-great, now I’ll be worrying about the fact that I worry about not getting enough sleep.

•2Don't force yourself to sleep.
-so force sleep by using a big hammer is not an option?

•3Don't look at the alarm clock during the night.
-easy one, as it’s hard to sleep with your eyes open anyway.

•4Try to stay awake.
-riiiight…..I think the average insomniac has that one nailed.

•5 Go to bed only when you are sleepy.
-If I did that, I’d be in bed 24/7.

•6Don’t lie in bed awake for more than 15 minutes.
-that would make for busy nights.

•7Body-heating procedures.
-I’m usually right awake after a shower, but this might be different for everyone.

•8Naps.
-solid advice.

•9Establish a regular sleep schedule.
-that’s like telling someone with anorexia all will be cured if only they ate on a regular basis, duh.

•10Develop sleep rituals.
-cute, come and read me a bedtime story!

•11Avoid oversleep.
-I’ll fill my room with alarm clocks, and avoid looking at them…check.

•12Bedtime snacks.
-milk, turkey and peanuts…..pleaso DO brush your teeth before stepping back in.

•13Don't eat a heavy meal late in the day.
-I usually eat dinner at the end of the day… need a bit more info on this.

•14Time to worry and think.
-I’ll be worrying about remembering the location of the list if I write everything down.

•15Associate your bed and bedroom with sleep and sex only.
-great advice.

•16Sex.
-the “happy” chemicals tend to keep me awake, still, no complaints on this one.

•17Relax before going to bed.
-good one.

•18Noise.
-earplugs are not the best option for a good night sleep imo.

•19Alcohol as sleeping aid.
Excellent!!!....oh wait, avoid alcohol before bedtime….meh.

•20Caffeine.
-drinking loads of caffeine during the day might wear you out enough to actually fall asleep at night. Works for me.

•21Nicotine.
-I think telling someone who smokes not to take that last cig before bedtime is not the smartest thing.

Ok, so I’m no insomniac myself, I just suffer from the “too much time on my hands” syndrome apparently.

Most of these I learned from a doctor. Now, I am usually so wiped out by days end that I fall asleep before I can even wonder if I will.

Most of these I've figured out through trial and error... and usually ignore.

I've been reading about placebo effects too...

Bedtime snacks can help. An amino acid called tryptophan, found in milk, turkey, and peanuts, helps the brain produce serotonin, a chemical that helps you relax

So if I just drink milk and eat turkey I can keep serotonin instead of my life (and everyone around me) going to hell for a few days every month???

Pass the chocolate
