Why MPG is a Stupid Measurement Posted: 5 months ago by JDRucker
We tend to have bad measurement systems here in the US. We've got a temperature scale where water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 (it's zero and 100 for the rest of the world.) And none of our measurements are compatible with our base10 numbering system. Twelve inches in a foot? 5280 feet in a mile? I mean...come on...

We use the metric system in science any how and that's the place where I do the most measuring in my life. I mean way to give the whole rest of the world another reason to say how stuck up we are. One of our leaders needs the balls to say "We are changing to the metric system."
And what the guy is saying does have truth in it, but MPG is not going to change.

We started changing over a while back, didn't we?
Then it just seemed to fall away. I imagine it would be a huge undertaking.

The point is, the marketing people decide what goes on the car stickers not the engineer.

"Not only is a gallons per 10,000 mile system more accurate in terms of efficiency, it's better for the consumer."
Yeah, that really makes sense, measuring your car's efficiency by an increment that you will never drive at one time.
