Fah...I grew up in a household where the TV was on all day (my mother was addicted), and I turned out okay. How is 50 children a good sample? For cryin' out loud.

I agree with you Prish. The Tv was always on when I was growing up, too; I developed perfectly normally (no special difficulties etc.).
Although, it is quite an interesting fact that you use less energy watching TV than you do staring at a blank wall.
No I won't provide sources for my information. Just try it yourself; go turn on C4, or E4, or C+E4-1 or any other variant. You'll more than likely be watching Big Brother.
Feel your soul begin to drain away.
Back to the article...
Ignoring the fact it's the Daily Mail...
I have two neices, now 3 and 4. (So a year ago, perfect examples for this)
Usually, the Tv is on a lot; they will spend hours watching it. Indeed, that godawful Dora the Explorer has taught the elder of the two basic Spanish (more than I can speak).
Now, although the elder is also very much overweight (alarmingly) she is very active and doesn't seem to find it difficult to engage in other play.
(Hadn't even read that excessive TV can stunt language skills; maybe this is true. However, I can attest to the elder's ability to babble constantly, consistently, over a wide range of variety of subjects she halfunderstands.
(The younger is too shy to talk; it takes five to six days for her to talk when I'm in the room, specifically, when we visit. I don't know what it is. (The Tv.))
Spotted this:
"In 2003 a study found a link between time spent watching television and difficulty in reading."
Which means a correlational study found a link, which means they cannot draw conclusive links; it could be that because they have difficulty reading they spend more time watching TV.

I think it should be pretty obvious that their are better things your kids can be doing than watching tv. I wouldn't say that all kids that grow up watching tv are going to be retarded or anything, but I definitely think that keeping your kids away from tv or limiting their time spent watching it will make them better people in the long run.
And yes, I grew up watching quite a bit of tv and I turned out alright. I just think I can do better with my daughter :)

My research into the article has brought me to the conclusion that the children involved in the study were just more interested in watching Jeopardy than playing but they had to play the charade so their parents wouldn't catch on to their genius. Therefore turning the TV off during the study has in turn caused great effect on the children who now won't know the answers later on in life.
This of course would be in comparisson to a purple dinosaur or some Teletubbies that barely talk at all.
