Water, good ol' H2O, seems like a pretty simple substance to you and me. But in reality, water - the foundation of life and most common of liquid - is really weird and scientists actually don't completely understand how water works.

My daughter's friend did a water and ice experiment for the science fair a few years ago, and that is what she found out. So from that time on, I always filled my ice trays with hot water. Now I have an ice maker in my fridge.

Actually hot water doesn't freeze. Technically by the time it freezes it's cold but pendanticity aside I have always put warmer water into the freezer to make ice cubes.

"not usually, but under certain circumstances it does"
and the difference in time is really, really negligible - so using warmer water in your ice cube trays is really just giving you a smug satisfaction of knowing random water trivia, not faster ice cubes ;)

I really want to try the supercooled water experiment. From what I've read though, you can't do it in a standard freezer because of the vibrations from the fan and it's kind of hard to freeze things outside during summer in Maryland.
