I was given a over summer project to read the book "The Jungle" and i have to write a 1 page summery every three chapters.

Well my summer is almost over and i havent started it at all yet. and my rents have no idea that i have to do it. And im running out of time to work on it because my parents thought it would be good for me to mow FREAKIN' lawns during the day from 7am to 4pm each day.

and the second to last week of summer im going on a cruise but theres no way in hell im working while im on a cruise.

Any ideas guy and girls?

BTW: i can't use sites like spark notes either.

AND IF I DON'T DO THIS I WILL NOT GET INTO MY AP CLASSES!!!!!!!!!! and my parents are really excited that im doing that.

Geez what am i going to do with myself. First women now school. what next?

First, never mention pickle in a sex category. Anybody that frequents Fark has heard of the unfortunate incident involving a member named Lucky Charms who "accidentally" posted an image of a man, a pickle, and where the sun don't shine.

Second, do you want to be in AP classes? If so, find the time to read the book. I believe it's around 400 pages, and 70 pages a night will get you through it in just under a week. You've procrastinated all summer, so buck down now.

Third, and I know you probably won't listen to this advice, but now is the time in your life that you will develop things that follow throughout your life. Things like sticking to a schedule, following through, procrastination. As you get older, the things you did in your youth will continue, and get worse. Never set a goal now? Chances are you will go through life never setting goals. Do the right things now, before you get set in your ways. And you will.

It won't be that bad. I never read a book during school I ever regretted reading.

EDIT TO ADD: If the deadline gets to be too much, own up to your parents and tell them you need to drop the mowing job. AP classes are more important than proper edging.

Finish this before you go on the cruise. Set this goal to be done by the time you go, and the cruise can be your reward. Plus, you won't have to worry about the project.

Ok, here's 'The Jungle:101'

In a nutshell, the Jungle is the most depressing peice of socialist propoganda ever written.

The story takes place around the turn of the century furing the industrial revolution. The main character is Jurgis, a Lithuanian immigrant who lives in Chicago. At first, things go OK for Jurgis. He manages to get a job in a meat packing plant, gets married to a fellow immigrant named Ona, buys a house, and has a kid. Then things go downhill. He sprains his ankle, which cost him his job. His father dies from the horrible conditions in the factory where he works. Jurgis finds out that his wife is being forced to sleep with her boss. Jurgis punches the guy and is arrested. After a month he is released, only to find his house has been repossessed. His wife dies in the proscess of having her boss's baby. Another member of the family becomes a prostitute at some point in the novel. Jurgis' son drowns. He wanders around the country for a while as a hobo but goes back to the city in the winter. The rest of the novel is basically him struggling to get work until he finds out about this great new idea: socialism! In an unsubtle political statement, Jurgis becomes an avid socialist and attends their meetings. The book ends with Jurgis being arrested for again trying to kill the man who slept with his bosses wife, but with the Socialist party making huge gains in an election.

The book was written to glorify socialism by showing the horrible conditions of the working class. At every point in the story, Jurgisis struggling to make a living doing horrible work for very little money while the owners do nothing and reap huge profits. The bottom line is that capitalism is inneffective, and the answer is socialism.

The main thing the book is famous for is it's descrpitions of the meat packing industry at the time. Sinclair spends a large portion of the novel detailing the horrendous and wholly unsanitary conditions of the meat making process at the time. It's really quite disgusting. Anyway, the book didn't win that many socialist converts, but people were horrified when they realized how can meat was prepared. This sparked a HUGE public outrage, which led to the creations of food saftey standards and eventually the FDA. Because of the meat packing descriptions and subsequent government inervention, The Jungle is considered one of the most influential books ever written.

Any way you can break it down by chapter for him? He has to write something every three chapters.

Not to cheat, of course, just so that he can skim some parts. Right, beany? (wink-wink, nudge-nudge)

Wow. Blah blah blah. Talk about over-achievers.

1 page summary every three chapters? For one, your teacher is lame. No teacher will read all those papers from all those students. You'll turn in the papers, the teacher will skim or randomly read 1 page from random students. The odds of your stuff being read is low. Look at the titles of each chapter, read the first and last paragraphs. TYPE out your summary - 3/4 page. Make it look neat and make sure it makes sense so if it is read all the teacher will do is look at one page then check it off.

On a side note, where are you planning to go to college and for what major? If it's public college, you don't need AP classes. They're a waste of time. If it's private college and you're a perfectionist then take them.

Honestly, high school is a dog and pony show. Get your diploma and get into college...don't sweat high school.

Think smarter not harder people.

but that's just my opinion...
