No.

They need to spend time in college studying something that they can pursue after they blow their knee out right before the big game.

yup, and they are

Their pay is the sometimes 30,000+ per year that they are getting in education, housing and food, not to mention the chance to get drafted.

I agree with you both. My biggest gripe is that, despite the millions of dollars pouring into some of these institutions, tuition costs are still off-the-scale exorbitant.

I'm on board with you guys. The price of schooling is reaching into the stratosphere. So they essentially make more money going to school than I do going to work.

Ok, basic economics says that when somebody hands over money it has to go somewhere...

If a college is taking in 50 million dollars and not giving any to the players.. who gets it? It's not in some giant trustfund that keeps growing. It's obviously not being used to lower tuition rates. Who is getting rich here?

I wouldn't put too much stock in this racist writer though. I think he's gone just a bit far in his assumptions that 'the white man' is just using football to 'keep the black man down'

Actually it is in a trust fund. I know Harvard has more money than any other school not just because of its wealthy alumni but because it owns huge chunks of Cambridge and Boston. I am not talking about just the school grounds. I mean malls and residential property as well. They had a big hand in the huge rise in property costs in Massachusetts in the last decade.

I agree with you guys...the education is the payment! A little bit of research would have shown that Univ of Tx athletes (all athletes) scholarships are not given by the institution but are monies raised by athletics. Any athletic program whether it is a team or study hall (paying for tutors) is funded by these monies raised by the team or by boosters. Maybe if all these guys focused on graduating and getting a good job instead of going to "the league" they would be better off.
