Some sports have shown major improvements over the years. As an example Spitz's 1972 Olympic and World record time would have been too slow to even make the field. Others like free throws in basketball have shown very little improvements. Two interesting articles

Probably because they are such a boring accomplishment people have got better things to do with their time and work towards beating a recognizable goal
