Social Security Numbers Gleaned From Public Data
Social Security Numbers Gleaned From Public Data
For years, government officials have urged people to protect their Social Security numbers by giving out the nine-digit codes only when absolutely necessary. Now it turns out that all the caution in the world may not be enough: New research shows that Social Security numbers can be predicted from publicly available birth information with a surprising degree of accuracy. picked by Bingo 5 months ago

I still don't understand why we're not allowed to laminate the paper cards that are issued.

Because if you can laminate it, it'll last longer, and then the government won't get the joy of making you wait in many lines with much paperwork to get a new one.

Duh.

Why do you need to? Don't you know your number? It also isn't a good idea to carry it around with you. In fact, it's a very bad idea!

Plus, right on the card it says not for personal identification.

Probably so you can have it for when you need it.

They can guess based on hometown and birthdate.
Also my SSN is not from the state in which I was born. Also I list my hometown as where I 'landed' not where my parents lived for 6 more months after I was born ;)

State has nothing to do with it.

I do know my # and don't carry my card, not that it really mattered. Missouri used SSNs as DL#s up until a few years ago. Every time I wrote a check or bought beer, I was flashing my SSN.

However, the card was, at the time, required to get a job I wanted. At the final interview, the interviewer spilled a glass of water all over my papers and all but dissolved my SS card.

Would have been nice if I'd been 'allowed' to laminate it rather than have to go through the circus that is getting a new one issued.

That's nuts!

I remember when the SSN card had printed on it: "Not to be used as ID". I use that phrase whenever I am asked for my SSN. People look confused by that statement!

Sadly, it is now used as ID by the US military (instead of "service numbers") as well as the VA medical system!
