Mitsubishi Electric Corp and IHI Corp have agreed to work with several companies, to develop technology for a solar station in space. It will take about $21 billion to fund this Japanese project and about 20 years to try to make it happen.That is a lot of time and money.

This is a pretty interesting concept. I saw a special on Discovery about alternative power and they were discussing this. In the model they were talking about, the power is beamed to the surface via microwave.
The question that immediately comes to mind is what happens if an airplane flies through the power transmission.
Answer: apparently nothing. Doesn't even cook the folks inside the aircraft. I guess it has something to do with the time in the beam.
