Found this on Cnet, dated 27th March. I'm surprised nobody has linked it yet .. did the old dupe search with all the keywords separately, together, etc.

Pumping compressed air underground will create a sort of "battery" for the extra power generated at low-consumption times. It will require the existence of layers of rock nearby, though.
