The article mentions Americans wiping with catalogs and other free papers. My Grandfather who lived through the depression in western PA (think quaterback corner Beaver Falls area) used PHONE BOOKS in his outhouse. An outhouse he used year-round, and prefered even in the winter. Always a source of pride his improvements (heater, lights) and upgrades to the privy were the first thing he showed off every year at Thanksgiving.
