When's the right time for a kid to have a cell phone?

Ten year old girls are no longer begging for Barbie dolls, unless that's the wallpaper that'll appear on their cell phone screens. Parents nowadays have to make the following judgment call: should they give in to their kids' pleas for a cell phone (it's the latest status symbol) or refuse on the grounds that it's simply unnecessary? picked by ybne1else 2 years ago

I like the cell phones they have that are strickly for kids; you have 6 pre-set numbers. That's it. Those, are a good idea from a safety stand point.

Kids are always going to be completing with each other about who has the best gadget. When I was young it was dolls and skateboards. Now it's electronics. Heck, my husband does this with his friends. I've always called it a "weiny wagging contest". Basically that's what it is. One of the boys always has to have the best tool, car, motorcycle, whatever.

If parents want there kids to be safe, they should get them the phone I mentioned above. I'll see if I can find it on the net and post the link here....

Have you seen Jitterbug the phone for old people. The buttons are huge and it only calls people they should get those.
