Ford Introduces Car-Limiting MyKey For Worried Parents Posted: 2 months ago by punthe
MyKey can do three basic things: allow parents to limit a vehicle's top speed to 80 mph and/or the stereo's volume up to 44% of its max, and set a sustaining chime if the seatbelts aren't being used.

What a good idea but why 80 miles per hour - that's above most countries national speed limit - 45 or 50 would be more sensible!

I agree to an extent. Perhaps 65 would be more suitable. Most highways and interstates do not exceed 65 and in some parts of the country, you have to take the highway or interstate to get anywhere.

If you cannot trust your child to not cross these (rather normal) boundaries, then maybe the kid shouldn't be alone in a car in the first place?

...just a thought.

There are areas of the US (I remember one in Pennsylvania actually) that had a posted speed limit of 75.

Frankly, I've never understood why cars can 'go to 120' anyways.

You can accomplish basically the same thing for a lot less by buying your kid a 1980s clunker that would take an act of god to get over 70mph. A Chevette works nicely. S/he also won't be getting laid in a Chevette, so it has that added bonus of birth control.

Maybe in case the driver needs to be able to go faster to avoid a collision or other problem?

We have 70 speed limits out here. I like the feature with the stereo though. I do like the idea of giving them a Chevette, not a whole lot power in those things.

How about a moped! That would solve many of the problems like radio volume, speed, and birth control. I think this should be for more than just worried parents. How about the habitual speeder? Have the judge "issue" one of these keys.

A 81' Honda Civic,

In my youth, I did the dirty deed many times in my Civic. The only issue was where to park and not get caught.

I think the greatest device Ford could give parents is a GPS tracking device they can check whenever, and the ability to talk through the radio, for times when out past curfew.

Yeah a backseat limiter would have been more useful for me.

My first car was a 1980 Toyota Tercel/Corolla, it was faded blue, would scantly do 70mph, and didn't hinder me from getting laid.

My second was an 81 Honda Accord Coupe (same color as the one Alton posted) I bought that one from an x-girlfriend and while I didn't hump her in it, I humped one of her friends.

My 3rd car/4th car was a 1975 Fiat 124 Spider that I purchased myself for 750 dollars, and I got MOLTO bella fica all OVER that car.

The 4th (which I owned at the same time) was a bizarre gift from my father a 1979 Celica GT. Brown, with doors that only opened from the inside, and a roll up manual sunroof (which is how you had to access the car) 187,000 miles, and 4 bald tires. My gf (wife now) would NOT put out in that car, but like I said, I had the Fiat too. The Celica was just ridiculously nasty, and out of control, I always wanted to do some standing on the buckets half out the sunroof action but it was just not gonna happen in that car. Oh well.

Moral of the story, almost NO car is going to keep your kid from getting laid, and if you don't trust their driving enough that they won't kill themselves...don't let them drive.

OK, what will be the ratio of 'kids' that need these regulations by their parents that will actually OWN one of these vehicles? I understand there are some well-to-do parents that will pop for these cars, but I would think most of the kids that need this regulation will be driving cars 10 years old or older.

Now, if you buy it for yourself and let them use it and can turn it on and off, then I can see the logic in it.

And what about texting while driving. My 18 year old still does this regardless of telling him of the dangers involved. Seems he can text without having to even look at the phone. I can't tie my shoes without looking at them.

Don't forget about certain places in the US where the speed limit is "Reasonable and prudent". Montana has roads like that I know.

i feel the safest of all "parental" oversights is cell phone signal scrambling; which hinders cell phone use in certain situations.

Subaru and Nissan have been doing this since at least the early 90s.

Well done, Ford. Welcome to the 20th Century.

I fully expect your next model to have Power Steering.
