I just want to take a moment this Memorial Day and express my gratitude, respect, and admiration for you for serving in the military and defending our freedoms.

All too often it is a thankless job, one that the very people you are protecting look down on you. Please know that that you are appreciated tremendously.

I thank you and all who have served in the military.

I agree.

The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you’ll find him;
His father’s sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;
“Land of Song!” cried the warrior bard,
“Tho’ all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy right shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!”

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman’s chain
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov’d ne’er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said “No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and brav’ry!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!

The minstrel boy will return one day,
When we hear the news, we will cheer it.
The minstrel boy will return we pray,
Torn in body, perhaps, but not in spirit.
Then may he play his harp in peace,
In a world such as Heaven intended,
For every quarrel of Man must cease,
And every battle shall be ended.
~The Minstrel Boy, Thomas Moore

A big thank you to all of those who go out in uniform so we can dream our dreams.

Right on 2many. Thanks to all. And I know 2many can't remember or know everyone who frequents the forums as having served, but if there's any you know, go ahead and thank them by name here.

Thanks Icepigs.

And as it's Memorial Day, thanks to my Dad.

Yes, I meant to add that I didn't know who all else served in the military. Thanks for covering my lapse.

I thought everyone forgot what today was all about. Thank you 2many, Grath, and Tom for remembering what today is all about. yesterday i spent putting flags near headstones @ the local VA cemetery and went to the VFW to share some stories and down a few brews with fellow war vets. WWII/ Korea vets are a becoming fewer and fewer. These men and women are a totally different breed then people of today. they are people with a general love of their country. true Patriots. as long as people remember if it wasnt for the vets of this counrty, the ones who lived and specifically the ones who have passed on, we wouldn't be having BBQs with the family. we owe thanks, for the freedoms we enjoy daily. thats what today is all about. so to those that served, past and present, *salutes

I know Memorial Day is an American holiday but I'd just like to mention my Grandad who was a Japanese POW and came back a shadow of the man he was.

He's passed away now but through his bravery and being a great man his memory lives on in our family.

I am sure I can speak on behalf of my fellow veterans when I say that Memorial Day isn't for us. It is for the others who served before us. Those who served in war and in peace. Those who put their lives on the line to provide our freedoms. I will be remembering my Grandfather (US Navy) and my Uncle (US Marine Corps) as well as those hundreds of thousands who gave the ultimate sacrifice. I, too, salute them.

Don't sell youself short. Every military person signs up to put their lives on the line to provide our freedoms. Some don't end up getting asked to make good on that promise, but even if you aren't asked to actually fight, you were still willing to if needed.

All those except the cowards who cry and either sue the military not to fight or just go Awol when they are asked to do more than sit around deserve our heartfelt and deep admiration and thanks.

Not being called to fight doesn't make a soldier any less deserving.

Yes this is a time for remembering those of the past, but we want to thank you as well.

My grandfather was in the Air Force in Vietnam. He said he never shot at anyone, and as far as he knows he never had anyone shooting at him. But he's still haunted by the horrors of a war I can't even begin to imagine.

"It doesn't end with peace," he always says. "The soldiers who make it home continue to deal with it every day of their lives. We're still fighting the war."

I think our thanks is due also to those soldiers who didn't die for their country, but still ended up giving their lives for it.

My Grandfather served during WWII. My husband is active duty now. I'm thankful to all the current service members who volunteer to serve, without knowing what will happen, without knowing if they'll be safe, but choose this life for the betterment of our country.

Today, I was relying on my mother for a ride, so I only got to stop by Veterans Memorial Park for about an hour.
But while I was there, I met some of the veterans who were visiting and paying their respects. I met some awesome men. I laughed, cried, and even danced.
I'm going back tomorrow when someone is in the front office so I can ask to volunteer until I leave for Basic.

Dude, do you want people to thank everyone individually who's ever served or had anything to do with the military?

I kinda think you're missing the point of this thread, ect.
