The Nuclear Threat
The Nuclear Threat
A look at strike capabilities worldwide, and how a bomb would affect single cities and people.
Nine countries could kill many people on a moment’s notice by launching missiles carrying nuclear warheads. A 10th, Iran, may be weaponizing uranium. The U.S., Russia and China can bomb virtually any country with long-range ballistic missiles and, along with France and the U.K., could do the same using submarines. The effects of even one bomb could far exceed the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. picked by 2manyusernames 12 months ago

I'm one of those people who chose not to think about this stuff. I know it is real. Very real. It's a dark thing. It's fine for science-fiction, drama, action etc of movies, but then it gets fixed and all is well. I just don't like to think about it.

You can't fight progress. Such discoveries will always happen. No doubt we will discover some even worse.

There is tremendous good that can come from the use of nuclear power as a source of energy. Sadly due to such propaganda and misunderstanding, we will probably never utilize it to its full potential

Yes, there are concerns, some quite legitimate, but for the most part they are overblown:

Here and here.

Bioweapons are something far far worse in my opinion and a lot easier to get a hold of.

Are those maps showing the result of a single warhead?

The US nuke program isn't really considered a first strike weapon anymore and the number of nukes online has reduced in recent years. The Minute Man missiles are being maintained, but the Peace Keeper program has been deactivated and the holes stripped and closed. A conventional warhead on an ICBM would be equally devestating in the short term without the long term consequences.

It was amusing--last weekend, there was a protest outside the base. They were holding up signs saying "Stop Nuclear Weapons Testing." I wanted to tell them they should be taking their signs to Iran and Korea instead!
