Lucid Dreaming

I've seen a few Plimates make mention of lucid dreaming, and I was wondering how one would get into lucid dreaming. I never remember dreaming at all, save a few odd occassions. I want to see how far I can go with this.

Gradually is the simple (and slightly irritating) answer.

It takes a lot of practice and there are no shortcuts.

Luckily the training doesn't require this:

<a href='http://www.plime.com/redir.p?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xBSfY01nMk' class='plime' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'><b>flash video</b></a>

It's more about developing habits.

The first thing to do is train yourself to remember your dreams.

There are two parts to this - one on going to bed and one on waking.

Each night, when you go to bed, think to yourself strongly and decisively "I will remember my dreams when I wake."

The mind is remarkably open to such instructions.

The morning part is a bit harder, but not impossible.

What you need to do is keep a notepad as a dream diary by the side of your bed. As soon as you wake up you need to write your recollections in this diary. Ideally you'll not use this notepad for anything else so that it becomes associated with dreaming in your mind.

This is the slow part, building up your recollection.

At first you may find you have nothing more than that you remember dreaming. But as you go you'll begin to get snippets. They may be as vague as "There was red. And my uncle Trevor. He had a shark on a leash." They may not even be that detailed.

As time goes on you will get more and more recall until you've got a fairly structured, if incoherent, narrative.

At that point I'd suggest either resurrecting this thread for more instruction or PMing me (or someone else if they come up with better direction) for the next phase.

It doesn't necessarily do to know all the steps before you start out on your journey.

I will though reassure you that phase two doesn't start "You're going to need a sharp knife, a goat, 4 chickens, a tarpaulin and a very big bowl. Oh, and probably some moist lemony towelettes."

Pock pretty much nailed it dead on. THE single most useful tool is the journal. When I first started, my first entry was:

Color: Brown

People: me, Farmer Brown

Description: I was asking Farmer Brown questions and recording answers on a clipboard.

Mind you this was when I was in 9th grade...and I still recall that dream. The journal will give you very good dream recall over time.

I ended up recording dreams that were full color, sounds, smells, and descriptions that were at times over two pages in length. It will not take that long to reach that phase either, usually a couple of months at best.

I recall my first lucid, what triggered it for me was the American Indian technique of looking at your hand in the dream. Somehow, it turns the lucid switch on. I was falling and sure to die. So I thought "I should look at my hand". I did, and then was able to do anything at all.

PM me if you want any advice whatsoever. I am also writing a dream journal software program. When it is done, I'll post it here.

And pay attention closely:

Use the dream notebook ONLY for dreams.

A good format is:

Date
Title (you make one up)
Colors
Sounds
Smells
Tastes
People / Characters / Animals
Overall emotion or feeling of the dream
Was the dream itself active or passive
Was your role in the dream active or passive
Description
Lucid, yes or no
Repeating, yes or no

Try not to have more than one per page. Leave at least one blank page between empty entries in case you get a huge description.

And THE MOST IMPORTANT thing is waste NO TIME in recording the dream!!! Many times I told myself that there would be NO WAY I could ever forget that dream...only to have it whiff away simply by getting up and using the bathroom. Journals will help with your recall, but ONLY if you use them.

Don't worry if you cannot fill in all the fields all the time.

Yup, you pretty much nailed it.

It was:

I'm doing it! EEEEE! Oh no! I'm waking up! No! No! Spin around, spin around!

*Wakes up*

Damn.

It's a start. You're not going to perfect it the first time out.

Try to remember tomorrow.

Are there any elements at all you can remember of the dream now?

Even if it's just "good dream."

I remember that I was active in the dream. I also remember the color beige. That's all that I'm recalling.

That's alright for starters.

Within a week you should be remembering details from your dreams.

Approximately 70%-90% of my dreams (or the ones that I can remember, anyway) are lucid. They play like a movie inside my head, but as if I'm the screenwriter. I can't always control the content, but I can control what happens. I'll also frequently wake up in the middle of a dream, and then roll over and go back to sleep so that I can resume it where I left off.

I had a slightly lucid dream once.
I woke up, I felt crappy, and went back to sleep. I had a dream, and in it, I could see my biological clock somehow. It said 11:30 am I was thinking "It's so nice sleeping.. but I don't want to waste my morning.. I think I'll get up." I got up thinking "Wow. I lucid dreamed!" My REAL alarm clock said 9:30 tho.

Well, I've had an odd past few days, and have had a few dreams. I haven't kept a diary yet, tbh. Not out of laziness, I just keep forgetting. One dream I do remember is being in a big grassy field, half night, half day. I ran around and played in the fields, and had a good time. It was a bit surreal.

The other night I dreamed that I had won the lottery and was attending school in England. I decided mid-dream to charter a plane and fly to Vegas for the Plime convention, and on the way there I dropped by Texas and picked up Subo.

Then I woke up.

*Sigh*

Like Pock and Moe said.
My dreams go just like ReBoots really.
I never did the dream diary thing, I just started after having nightmares for ages when I was young. I just started to Lucid dream, and would either wake myself up or change the dream. Now a days, I find somethings are out of control still in my dream. I know I'm dreaming and I can still wake myself up, but sometimes I can't force things to change. I think though that's something to do with my subconscious or something as it's the same things in my dreams I can't control.
Anyway, Lucid dreaming is awesome, and can make for fantastic dreams.

I just heard the term 'lucid' dreaming a year or so ago. To me it seams weird because since I can remember, I have been able to distinguish I was in a dream and alter the way it goes. I always like those dreams. They happen the most when I am in a lighter sleep. In the dreams I remember myself telling myself that I should dream that this happens and I should do this in my dream and then I do it. Hope that last line didn't sound to jumbled.

I never realized people had to train themselves to do this. I guess I must be lucky.

Another thing I can do is I can tell myself to have a dream again. I can tell myself "I liked that dream, but I usually take the whole dream in a new direction.
