Isn't it awsome to be an American

« dollyllama : The best part about being an American is that you can say you hate being here, you can hate the government and you can hate your surroundings and no one storms down your door and hauls you off to prison for it. Yet.
This is true for every country in the "western world", and some others. Freedom isn't unique to US, vocal self-hatred seems to be.

Perhaps. However, from what I saw in Europe: France, they vocally abused everyone, but there was a silent air of self-deprecation, that place was depressing.

Germany, wonderful country, still feeling the guilt of the holocaust, it was like a pall over that country. Some people lied about their past, while others just denied it's very existence.

American is big, boisterous and in-your-face. We make mistakes and sometimes in a big way. But we talk about them. We get them off our chests and we point them out. We do not mutter around unsmiling and meek. We f**k up with Panasche!

Maybe that seems sacrosanct to a Fin, the cultures are so different in that regard.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I myself have a love/hate relationship with this country. I love that it's such a great country, but I also know it could be sooo much better. :)

I work REALLY hard everyday. I cannot afford health care for my family. I am truly scared by the 1984-type government that appears to be evolving. I see injustice every. damn. day. Our kids are dying in countries they should not be in for likely false pretenses.

BUT on top of all that, I still would not want to live elsewhere.
I echo what you just said. You rock, girlie. I hate what our country is becoming, but I love America.

*dusts off the thread* christ on a cracker this is moldy *cough cough*. In all honesty though, sometimes being American ain't all that fabulous. Yes we have our freedom, but only to a point. There's still a couple of glass ceilings we hit concerning human rights and it aggravates me to no end how hypocritical our politicians are.

I love the US for its potentials.
I loved the CCCP for the same reason.
The difference between the two is that I did not move to live in the CCCP.
I also believe with the CCCP gone US lost much of the potentials it had.

I think it's pretty great. The current administration is embarrassing as hell, but all in all - yup, awesome!
