« mybrotherskeeper : I'm not drunk, and we have been creating shelter since we landed. I scouted the beach upon arrival for the perfect spot....

But I agree, the weather is starting to look nasty. I hope that Pock and Suebesdottir come back this way if that storm does hit our area.
MBK returns to the beach after finding a splendid spot for the camp, only to find everyone else drunk on Mead. No one did a damn thing. Sucks, but it looks like he's going to stay dry, then he needs to start on the shelter.

Boat 2 has created shelter out of bent saplings and leaves on the beach forest tree line. We start a fire outside of our shelter and start to assist others in setting up camp.
Unfortunately, I didn't read the part where anyone else on that boat said that they were going to do it. Just you suggesting it and them ignoring you to drink honey-ale.

Ok, so here comes a clarification.

"Hey guys I found a great spot, will someone help me finish this shelter? I already have a fire built outside of it so we can see."

I go over and help MBK erect a shelter. I avoid drinking mead--we have no idea what's about, and getting smashed and dehydrated seems like a bad plan.

I can't recall who brought the mead, but I've been sneaking drinks every since we got to dry land. I'm a bit tipsy and keep encouraging the other Vikings to rub my bald head for good luck.

And no way MBK, that's a crappy name. Let's call it Meadville.

Hmm, it would take 2 people several hours at least to build a decent shelter for twelve.

SO, when boat #4 arrives, MBK and Maven are two very tired people who have built a working framework for a shelter capable of keeping twelve (NOT sixteen) people somewhat dry. BUT, there is no roof yet, and now you have four more people with you to keep dry.

It is 8 PM. It is getting dark. And windy. The sea seems to be churning a bit. The boats are moving to and fro, but for the time, seem to be staying in place. Sort of. You have several people who have been drinking heavily since the boats were cleared of stuff. Anyone over the age of 7 could tell you that there is a storm brewing.

DL's last quote from the Havamal comes to mind...

A traveller cannot carry,
A more tedious burden than too much drink
A traveller cannot carry

Alright guys, help me gather some palm fronds to use as a roof for tonight so we can keep dry. Let us gather as many as we can so the wind may play yet still let us keep dry.

I stagger into the newly made shelter that Mav and MBK made and take my book of wisdom from inside my tunic and place it next to me as I sit down.

I start to think about my cheese, I'm hungry and cheese would fill the hole that's rapidly growing in my stomach.

I look down at my axe, maybe it would be a good idea to see if I can find some food before the storm sets in....

After waking up with a hangover *stupid mead* I notice we have finally touvhed land.

"AHA! Land! Tonight we shall feast and I shall continue on with the story of Hilda and her cruel father Wallace!"

Gets off the boat and prepares to make shelter amongst the trees. Also begins a fire pit

/anyone want to help?/

I roll my barrel of mead up into the shelter. When i notice there isn't a roof. So I help MBK put the last finishing touches on it by collecting palm fronds with Chez. I also string up my bow, and check the condition of my arrows.

And as i slept most of the day from my Mead binge, and didnt start the shelter or the fire...i offer to take first watch along with a couple others who would like to assist me. The storm seems to be brewing and i imagine the cool rain would be good upon my face.

More importantly i say we set up some traps/containers to catch some of the rainwater. We cannot drink Mead all day everyday...well i mean we could, lol. Anyone want to help me out though??

OK several people have mentioned palm fronds. This is the North Atlantic. There ain't no freaking palm fronds to be found. The forest is evergreen trees mostly, with some deciduous, but not many.

It is now 9 pm. Darkness has set in. The winds are now very high and the sea is a froth with the boats being pushed around freely. They have not broken away, but you believe it would be possible for that to happen. It starts to rain, big huge drops of cold biting storm. Lightning flashes against the sky, followed by deep rolling thunder almost immediately afterwards. Thor must be angry for some reason.

Discuss.

Hmmm...this may pose a problem. One that my recovering mead mind isnt ready to tackle yet.

Instead i yell out for anyone who may have some rope and instead will concentrate my efforts to pulling our boats SECURELY onto the shore. The boats, once on shore can also catch the fresh rainwater that we can later store in something else as drinking water.

I use some of my rope to pull our boat up on shore past our camp site and tie it up to nunkii's poop tree so it doesnt get blown back into the water.. leaving it rightside up so we can maybe collect some rainwater in it to drink in the morning..

I call killer back to the campsite also to see if he brought me back anything from along the beach

OK

A) I gave everyone the benefit of the doubt that you got off the boat and helped unload items when you got there. No sweat.

B) Smarty, apparently thinking he is superhuman attempts to pull a Viking longship over dry land singlehandedly. Very commendable and uber Viking blood and all, but still...Epic Fail. He does however, manage to move it closer to the beach, albeit still in the water. It does give you the idea that maybe you can beach the boats to the point where they won't blow away, but it will take a concerted effort and it needs to be done ASAP. You will very likely be cold and wet this night, but if you act now, you will still have the boats in the morning.

I decide to run over and help Smarty pull the longboats on land. also calling for others to come and help, as we might get all 4boats secured that way. I see xiatethebish nearby, and holla at her, on my way to help Smarty out. making sure to stay out of killer the dog's way as he makes me nervous...

OK seeing as how not everyone lives in the same time zones and also that not everyone can post all the time...

Three people who do respond in a timely fashion is the same as the whole group. Especially when it is an important task. SO, having said all that, the boats have been beached to the point where you feel that they should be able to ride the storm out safely.

As for your shelter, well if you crowd in nice and close, and use your shields / extra clothes / what have you, you can create a makeshift roof that will keep you from getting totally bone drenched. Just be sure to say thank you to the nice folks who made the framework.

Felling very accomplished...i let out a Viking roar of achievement and congratulate xiatethebish and smarty on a job well done.

After making sure that the boats are catching some of the fresh rainwater...I make my way to the shelter admiring what a nice job Maven and MBK did on setting it up. I sit next to the cozy fire, and indulge myself in Mead. Keeping my ears alert and eyes keen to the woods.
