New World (day 2)

For Day 1 click here.

At some point the three boat loads of brave vikings realized that they were nowhere near the new land, and had in fact found an island that was used as a waylay point for travelling ships.

Leaving a shelter behind for future men on the island, they shoved off in the late hours of the afternoon and pointed their ships back out in the direction they had originally been heading.

The journey was a little over two hours, and by the time land was spotted by pocksucket; the sun had begun to set. As they pulled into the little bay they were met by three men from the village and a face that was recognizable to them from the homeland; Antt.

The little village was exactly that; little. There were ten little huts in all, each with thatched roofs and wooden walls; and a long house at the far end. The village appeared to have been literally carved from the forest, stumps of trees could still be seen along the ground.

The village was positioned at the inside of a gulf, where a river emptied into the ocean. The river was used as a water source for them.

All around was thick wood.

A boar sat roasting over a fire in the center of town and several other silouhettes of people could be seen around it.

So...

[note. This will likely be one of the only, (if not; the only), posts that I will make today. I will be somewhat more active on Monday, hardly there Tues, and for the rest of the week I'll be on.]

You really meant FOUR boats...unless one of them sank on the way and no one noticed until now!

I get out of the boat and start pulling up onto the shore for everyone to get out. As I'm pulling the boat I can see the fire and the pig roasting above it.

Godammit, that pig looks good. I'm cold, wet and REALLY hungry, all I've eaten in the last 2 days is some dried food that Rambo gave me and managed to sniff my cheese before it got lost to the sea.

I'm just hoping the locals are in a sharing mood....

Agreed! I greet our friends, and help in getting the boats pulled to shore and anchored.

There are about twenty men and women in all and a handful of children; the others must be sleeping.

An older looking man with a long braided beard introduces himself as Norde. He rolls out a wooden barrel keg and pours tankards of mead out to pass it around to everyone.

"Welcome to the new land," Norde says to all of you. The men and women at the fire raise their tankards to you all and drink.

"Heilsa!" I cry - a Viking word of greeting - in the hope of attracting the attention of our friends from back home who came out here before us.

It's been a long time since we've seen them and there are good friends amongst them.

Plus, I'm hoping that some of them will come down here and help us with the boats. They need dragging up the shore and they don't get any lighter when they're wet.

Oh yeah, and some tasty, tasty spit roast pig product would be good too.

"Get your damn boats on the shore and get up here, men. The mead cask has been freshly tapped, and the boar is ready to eat," Norde says to you.

You work together and pull your ships in, making your way to camp.

Jerry (the pig) start to squealing when you try to get him out of the boat.

Norde takes one look at him and says "That's Bornbad and Suebesdottir's pig, I am sure of it! I recognize the birthmark on it that looks like Thor's hammer. Tell me, where is old Bornbad and his betrothed?"

Well, might as well make the best of this.

COME GATHER ROUND ALL! I SHALL TELL A TALE WHILE WE SUP!

This tale, will be one we all know very well, but it always bears repeating. And considering that this is a new world we have all ventured upon I believe it is quite fitting.

So when you have all filled your plates and cups, I shall be ready to tell this tale. *goes to grab some mead and meat, and sits close to the fire, waiting for everyone to join*

Norde...I'm so sorry.

Bornbad drowned before we could depart. Suebesdottir, too, has gone to Valhalla--we fear a sinkhole at the way island claimed her.

"It was not the action of a sinkhole that killed Suebesdottir, it was him." I spit as I point at Jerry (the person, not the pig).

I grab a goblet of mead and hold it aloft.

"To Suebesdottir. I will avenge you."

Then I chug the mead down in one.

There's a bit of an uncomfortable silence as it becomes clear to everyone that there's going to be a degree of drinking to forget that won't quite work going on tonight.

Luckily for everyone I walk off away from the fire to be alone with my grief and more mead. I don't want to be around for the retelling of this particular tale.

"I have already admitted that I made a terrible mistake, and am trying to atone for that mistake. I am sorry for what I have done, but there is no need to remind me of it at every chance you have. My guilt does that enough, thank you."

*chugs the rest of his mead and gets more.*

Come now, that time has past us. However ill a time it was, now is the time of healing. Jerry has proven his guilt and is willing to accept whatever fate the All-Father shall bestow upon him.

Take care in knowing that we will see our departed friends soon, once we pass from this life and into the next.

If you must, however, drown your sorrows for tonight. They'll only return upon the first kiss of Balder's light.

No good can come from holding on to your grief. It shall pass if you let it though. Now come and sit by me pocket. Let my voice and words soothe your soul and let only your good memories keep you company tonight.

He has no such thing. The journey has not be kind to any of us. How ever much grief he has, there is only one person here who can claim vegence upon those whom have wrongfully died as of late. And she has yet to make her decision!

Norde says "This news of Bornbad and Suebesdottir is poor indeed. I can see that there is much to be discussed about their deaths as well. However, this night is for the living. The dead are in Valhalla dining with the gods.

Let us not dwell on hard times tonight. Let us celebrate and be glad that the rest of you have arrived safely. Praise be to Odin for this. We can discuss this settlement and these personal issues tomorrow. Now, please, honor us by eating and drinking at our table."

With that he begins to fill your plates and your mugs.

"That right is as much mine as it is Suebe's.

"Suebesdottir was my betrothed. The Gods had 'twined our fates together and that lummox has flown in the face of the Gods' desires.

"Bad will come of this, you mark my words.

"But for respect of our gracious hosts I will talk no more of the matter tonight.
