Elderly Couple Commits Suicide Together...
... In fear of living a day without each other.

After reading The Final Exit, they took all the steps, wrote letters to all their friends and family, put their entire life in order. Both had been suffering with several health problems, and had made a pact to end it if things got bad. picked by muppetmaker 6 months ago

Anyone else think that what they did was actually sort of heroic?

I'm not really sure what to say. I think it is kinda bad ass in way. They wouldn't let the illness or the age take em out and went on their own terms.

I love plime for all the wonderful people that call it a second, or first, home, but still it is rare that anyone makes me laugh the way you just did. Thank you, poop.

I'm split.

On the one hand, I never think suicide is an alternative and any book advocating it IS going to be abused by those who aren't terminally ill and are only depressed.

On the other, they went out with a dignity which was only possible by going out on their terms at a time when they chose. Perhaps legal suicide should be allowed with proper planning, judgement, and with enough time to make an informed decision?

At what point do we stop calling it murder and start referring to it as 'pulling the plug'. And by that same question, when is it no longer suicide and has crossed over into 'dignified end'

It's a tough question, and I can't claim to have the answer. These people seem to have done the right thing for them though. They considered it, planned it, thought it over, knew teh options and made their own choice.

And I won't judge them for that.

The loving couple suffocated as they lay in bed listening to music
Doesn't seem so shameful to me.

What Mr Coverdale doesn't seem to realise is that sometimes people don't want to be alive any more. This isn't through cowardice, it's just that sometimes live can get incredibly long.

My own grandma stopped wanting to live. She stopped wanting to live when her husband died. She carried on for some 30 years after he died and she didn't want to live a single one of those days without him there.

She did carry on for those 30 year, but in the end when her body had almost completely betrayed her and she was lying in hospital waiting to die she took matters into her own hands and stop taking water.

That's not a death with any dignity to it.

That it becomes necessary is where the real shame lies.
