Retouching has always been done on models.

Retouching has always been done on models. Yes, but not to the level it is now. I've looked at magazines as new as 1988, and even then you could actually see the pores and imperfections in the models. They were still beautiful, but they weren't perfect.

I wholly support this. It's lamentable how many people, not only young women, who do not realize that the images they see are physiologically impossible and any attempt to hold a real human body to those standards would be laughable.

I was involved in conventional retouching for 40 years prior to PhotoShop type software. Not everything was retouched to the extent that evidence of pores were removed. It really depended on the eventual use of the image, the clients budget and the artistic measure of the art director/editor/client.
Just about anything that can be done in PhotoShop today was done years ago as well. Most of the composite type changes were darkroom masking efforts combined with hand retouching.
I will say that the advent of digital imaging tools has led to many images being over retouched.
