YouTube kind of has the same problem with its ratings system. Giving a video 5 stars is rated as "awesome!" but giving a video 5 stars doesn't always mean you like it but rather that you simply want more people to watch it. A lot of people get confused when they see videos of people they don't like (politicians) looking like an idiot or making a stupid statement - does it deserve 1 star because the person is an idiot, or do you give it 5 stars because you want more to watch it? And what about a protest in Iran for example where Basij are beating up protesters? You want more people to see the video and know what is happening in the country but it's hardly "awesome" (except for the original meaning of the word).
Some sites use the term follower instead of fan to avoid this. Then you're just following Auschwitz instead of becoming a fan.

Bad news and stupid statements also receive high ratings because they're rated based on newsworthiness. This becomes a problem when intolerable third-party statements are posted without any form of dissociation from the link content, because it basically results in free publicity for the wrong people.
