...This is yet another reason to avoid Saudi Arabia. Seriously - the [legal/judicial/social/political] system there is f**ked up beyond help.
The only real reason I'd ever go to Saudi was if I was a Muslim on the hajj. And I'm not Islamic, so that's probably a moot point anyways.

"Muslim Kingdom's Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice"
Whoa! I wonder how you get on that commission.
I'm sorry, but when I read that, I just couldn't stop laughing. Are you kidding me? They actually have something legitimate like this?
We may have problems in the US, but good Lord!
And what the hell is a "Wahhabism". Wasn't this a theme for Budweiser commercial at one time?

That's actually a misnomer. They're thugs and brutes who do whatever they want in the name of the Comission.
Last May, members of the Comission entered the home of a man who was suspected to have alcohol in his house. The man was beaten to death.
Another horrible incident was in 2002, when they locked 15 girls inside a burning school because they weren't "properly attired". They went so far as to barricade the doors and forcibly prevent firemen from saving the girls. All fifteen died.
These are also the guys (and they're always guys) responsible for preventing 'infidels' (read: nonMuslims) from practicing their religion in Saudi Arabia. If you're not a Muslim, you can't:
- be buried in the country
- go anywhere near Mecca or Medina
- be accorded the same legal status as a Wahabbi Muslim
- Religious segregation
- Much more. I could go on, but I won't. I'll just give you this image.
Not good stuff.
And what the hell is a "Wahhabism". Wasn't this a theme for Budweiser commercial at one time?
Wahabbism (read - wahabbi-ism) is a movement of Islam founded by Muhammad ibn Abd-al-Wahhab, who incidentally went on to found Saudi Arabia. His descendants are the royal line of SA. They're all Wahabbis. It'd be rare for someone to actually use the term, though - they prefer the word Muwahiddun, which means roughly 'peaceful unitarians'.
They're anything but.
They advocate a return to extreme fundamentalist Islam, and they happen to control Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities in Islam. This gives them considerable power over Islam worldwide.
They've promoted their version of Islam worldwide on the petrodollar that comes from the Saudi oilfields. Most of the money from the oil goes to the royal family to do this - Saudi Arabia is actually incredibly poor, if you're not one of the elite few.
Wow, that was a bunch of writing. Are things a little clearer now?
