This is not as surprising as it may first sound.

CDs, DVDs, and other disks of that ilk are made of bisphenol, a polycarbonate. The same polycarbonate that is used as the energy absorbing layer in bulletproof "glass".

In its bulletproof form, it is sandwiched between two less absorptive but stronger layers that keep the whole assembly in one piece under the stress of impact, but it's the bisphenol part that does the bullet stopping part.

When CDs first appeared on the scene there was a move afoot to get the nickname "bulletproof elephant" off the ground, the elephant part coming from their (at the time) unprecedented storage capacity. You kids may be surprised to know it, but once upon a time 700mb was almost unimaginably big.

Or, alternatively, Yay! DVDs.
