Sadly, we had many of these such stories in Jakarta.
It truly is abominable what happens, especially when they're forced out so that some rich government a*****e can condemn land and rezone it for private housing for himself or family or even friends. The poor people have nowhere to go, and they are evicted and forced to live like this.
It's a sick, sick practice.
