Muslim call to adopt Mecca time

The line of zero declination runs from Wisconsin through Louisiana. Over the past 300 years that line has been far more stable than the one which they're trying to use as the basis of the claim that Mecca should be the standard point.

Not only that, but Mecca isn't at zero degrees declination, it's at about 3 to 5 degrees, and the zero line has been moving away from it for the past 50 years.

Yet another case of bulls**t muslim "science".

There are "scientists" in Iraq, who claim the Earth is flat.

That is a bit much dontcha think? It isn't science, it is religion, and isn't exactly hurting you so why do you care so much?

There are "scientists" in Iraq, who claim the Earth is flat.
There are 'scientists' in America that think the same thing. No matter where you go, there will be dumb asses. Granted it seems to be more tolerated in theocracy's, it still exists everywhere.

""He said the English had imposed GMT on the rest of the world by force when Britain was a big colonial power, and it was about time that changed. ""

and im assuming they think they are now the worlds next big power? lol

Actually the world should adopt Tallahassee time as that is where I live and I am the center of the universe. Don't believe me? Ask my mom

Oh please! I know you have your strong bias but really.
It was one scientist and the Muslim who was interviewing him obviously thought the guy was a nut. The interviewer treated the "scientist" with respect and acted as if he believed him just to let the man spout his insanity for the humor and entertainment factor. They do the same thing in many countries. And of course there are kooks in every country as well.

Also there is no such thing as a "zero declination" it is a man-made line, it isn't a physical feature. Any arbitrary point on the globe could be the zero declination. GMT was used not so much because England was a world-power, well yes because of that AND because of the importance of time to ocean going vessels. England was of course the early maritime power, making Greenwich as a logical place for the center point.

"Zero Declination" has nothing to do with a man-made line.

I am referrring to a line in which, for the past 500 years, there has been no variance between magnetic north and the true north.

Most locations on Earth have a variance between magnetic and true north. It can be over 10 degrees in most places.

The guy is trying to claim that Mecca has no magnetic variance, which is false.

The line I am referring to is in the US, and it has remained magnetically stable for over 500 years.

To avoid hurting the feelings of any one culture or religion, I think we should just make every longitude represent 0 UT. Problem solved! Has the added bonus of making all blinking VCR's show the correct time now everywhere. Cha ching!

HOLY SMOKES!! I HAD NO IDEA IT STOPPED AT THE US BORDERS!! This means I have to unlearn EVERYTHING!!

The 0 declination line has been shifting through Louisiana, too. Look through government topo maps over the last century and you'll see it's been moseying along. The magnetic field is dynamic and changes and moves, even in Wisconsin through to Louisiana.

okay, you are correct there with the exception that it does move and has changed wildly before. 500 years is nothing compared to the age of the earth so there is no reason to use that arbitrarily chosen line over another.

That doesn't mean we should change the zero time line to mecca or anywhere else for that matter (which I know you weren't advocating)

Oooh, you're wrong on that one. It hasn't moved much, perhaps at your latitude only a few kilometres, but it's moved.

I know this because I recently spent an entire week with a geophysicist rectifying some old geomagnetic surveys with new ones, right near the zero-decilination line in Wisconsin, and that darned line? It moved!

Which was nice, because when we did the same thing on another data set the declination (and inclination, because were at a large enough latitiude where were were significantly affected by inclination) had changed by several degrees between surveys.
