Love that Sun Shine! Oops, that is an offensive word
Florida has created a new ad campaign promoting tourism targeting minorities, especially african-americans and hispanics. Their one word slogan is "Shine" as in sunshine, as in Florida. The NAACP is whining that the word shine can be taken as a racial slur by some or at least one person. AHHHHGGGGG picked by 2manyusernames 9 months ago

I had initially thought that the 'outraged' group were Christians, as I recall seeing signs all over one Canadian city (can't remember which one) advertising for 'Shine', which was a pentecostal church or youth group or something.

If no-one knows that it is a slur, is it still a slur then?

Florida - advertising sunshine - Shine - makes sense, not offence, to me.

"For many persons in the African-American community, that term definitely has a negative connotation," Evans said. "The younger people, younger than 30, might not be familiar with it, but we will educate them about it."

Oh good idea, lets make sure the slurs continue in perpetuity. Its only a slur if people know about it and give it power. Good job taking a step backwards.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I didn't know what it meant..although "To Shine Somebody Off" lingers in my memory but I don't think that was even ractist...I know it wasn't to me.

I dunno...I guess they could use a more democratic way to pick a new word...how about asking the idiot for a list of acceptable terms and then pick the winner using "Eennie Meenie Minnie Moe" :) (don't know how many will get that)

That IS a racist term but it goes back quite a few years. I haven't heard anyone use it for many years.

When I was growing up in the '40's, in NYC, it was a derogatory term indicating a black person but even then I never knew why it was used or what it meant.

That is just stupid! I would have never thought connected Shine to being a racial slur at all some people need to find better things to do with their time, or get a girlfriend or something.

In other news, Canada bows to pressure and declares the nickel illegal.

Words change their meaning over time. Sometimes they actually become less offensive. How does railing against what was help anyone move forward? This reminds me of the minor Mexican uproar against Spic and Span in the 90s, some 60 years after the product first came to market.

This sucks.

(NSFW warning: Though "sucks" has evolved from its earlier meaning (sucks d**k) to a less offensive one (bad), we should always remember and visualize someone actually sucking d**k whenever we use the word. It'll keep us on our toes.)

"Sucks" is one of the words I don't let my students say because it's overused and inappropriate. I explain that there are so many more intelligent sounding words that express the same thing. A student once replied, "Well, can I say 'greatly inhales'?" I told him that was an acceptable alternative.
