Doomsday 2012 ? [video]
Part one of two videos on the History channel on the end of days. From the Mayans, I Ching and Web bots, it all points to the same year. picked by TraumaMamma 9 months ago

The thing that makes me wonder is the Black hole in the milky way and the Polar shift.

Cool. That would be the day I would wanna do it!

I don't see it as the END of the world in a final sense, but maybe an end to the way we know it. Going back to a primative state.

I mean, just IMAGINE if we had no electricity. We depend on that for stores, power, heat, to get money out of an atm, etc.

Or if we lost basic water as we know it? It would sure be survival of the fittest! What would pampered people do?

I can write 1000 predictions for the next year and I would bet you all the money in the world that at AT LEAST ONE would come true. The doom and gloom talk has happened from the dawn of time. And sometimes, yes doom happens. But its all about the life/death/rebirth cycle. If humans go extinct, another species will become dominant.

I've heard most of that all before, was interesting to see them all compared to each other.

Personally, I highly doubt it's going to be the end of the world. I find myself hoping, more and more recently, that it will be the end of the world as we know it though. We've definitely been on a downward spiral recently; generally speaking though there have been many positives as well, but the overall trend seems to be negative. It would be nice to see a change; even if it means that a whole lot of bad mumbojumbo is gonna go down on December 21st 2012 before it gets better (just my two cents of course).

These guys were quite capable at demonstrating that they have absolutely no understanding of pole reversals at all! (really good intro to mag reversals)

I watched that segment a few times, because I couldn't quite believe my ears.

There is no 'new study from Princeton' suggesting that the poles have shifted before - it's a known fact, as are the ages of pole reversals. They are recorded best in the seafloor (new basalt lava records the earth's magnetic field when it quenches), so it's easy to interpret the ages and durations of each normal or reversed magnetic period.

I'd like to add that I have never encountered any literature describing global catastrophes associated with polar reversal - why would this cause earthquakes and tsunamis? (Did anyone catch the fact that it was a hurricane being filmed while 'tsunami' was mentioned?)

In addition, these guys think that the earth had tipped so that "alaska" was equatorial 600ma ago - that's plate tectonics at work, not mantle magnetics!!! A six year old could have done six minutes of research and come up with a more correct interpretation than these buggers!! My brain is raging from the stupidity!!! (sorry, it's friday, my brain needs a beer).

The fields could switch tomorrow, and I think the only things that would change is the direction my compass pointed. No climate change becasue of it (the earth's not going to up and move), no catastrophes, except for instruments that still use magnetics to navigate. The only people that might be really affected are geophysicists, who would have to apply their usual magnetic formulas in reverse. This would cause widespread suffering and coffee consumption by geofantacists.... I mean geophysicists who would have just one more correction to apply before giving their work to the geologists who will still think they are out to lunch, polar switch or not.

I was so worked up I forgot to comment on the doomsday bit:

*woozy lights, eerie voice*

Yessss, it will come true.

This is a very good point. I think it would be similar to the sun shifting its magnetic pole.

If the sun, being far larger than the Earth, can shift its poles and not cause devastation or class Y solar flares that destroy the Earth, then I doubt anything will happen here on Earth, except your compass flipping. Yee haw.
