Is Your Baby A Finicky Eater or A Racist?
Is Your Baby A Finicky Eater or A Racist?
The National Children's Bureau, has issued guidance to play leaders and nursery teachers advising them to be alert for racist incidents among youngsters in their care.

Racist incidents, which include such things as 3-year olds turning their nose up at unfamiliar food. picked by 2manyusernames 3 months ago

obviously, focusing on one sentence out of 366-page guideline is very silly and detracts from what could be a good set of guidelines (with the one exception).

Still it is pretty ignorant to label a 3-year old racist because he doesn't eat food he is not familiar with.

Any one who has children, babysat, had young siblings, or in anyway been around infants know that they can be very very picky in what they'll eat.

Racism is never the reason for their refusal to eat a certain food.

it's definitely interesting and could be good. I agree with explaining to children very specifically why they shouldn't name call or exclude people who are different

My goodness - how many adults still say 'yuk' to unfamiliar food? I know many who do! This doesn't make anyone a racist.

I guess I'm a vegetist. I don't like asparagus.

Is racism inherent in our behavior or is it learned (nature/nurture eh?) A little of both would be my guess.

A 3 year old cannot be racist. they don't have the mental development to classify people by the colour of skin, no matter what bulls**t the government try to say. Racism can be instilled into them by parents but without the understanding of what they are saying it isn't racism it is merely mimicking.

I agree completely that incidents of name calling should be pointed out but come on.....

are they seriously implying that someone who is scared to try something new, especially a child, is racist?

Actually whatever country Asparagus originates from, you're racist against that country. Whatever it is... ya racist!

I can't take it anymore!!!!

The larger problem here is that government is telling people what preferences thay can have.

Something has to be said:
Discrimination is NOT that bad!

I have a friend who will only date other black people. She's not racist, she has a discrimination in her preferences.

I used to live next door to some people from India, and you know what?

THEY DID SMELL!
Simply noticing that doesn't make me racist. But more imnportantly, even if I was a member of the Aryan Brotherhood, but wasn't rude or criminal, so what?

Hunting for prejudice under every rock is turning US, UK, and Germany into facists. We're being extremely intollerant of silly things.

Not only that, but from what I understand if you ask someone from China they will probably say that they think Westerners smell.

Has something to do with the milk/cheese in our diet.

Wow, that's a pretty emotional response.

So should we outlaw certain belief systems?

You seemed to take my post as if I were those things. I am not even close. I'm just concerned about the climate of not being to think freely without someone jumping down your throat.

I think my point is valid.

Not being a cyborg I get quite emotional about racist a*****es, yes. I'm not to say you are racist but it was you who said that basically it doesn't matter if someone is a member of the Aryan Brotherhood.

I'm all for free-thinking, think what you want but I reserve the right to hate you and call you an a*****e if you're a racist.

I think 2 issues are getting confused here.

In saying "It doesn't matter", I didn't mean, I don't care.
Hate someone for that is fine. I wouldn't associate with someone like that either. But the discussion wasn't about who we liked.

When I said "so what" I meant it from a legislative perspective. As in what business is it of the government's what someone believes. People seem to react with "Who cares. They’re evil", but once the government can interfere based on your ideas instead of your actions, we will have huge problems.

Look, if someone has a swastika tattoo on his forehead, I'm all for ostracizing him. BUT IF WE USE THE MACHINERY OF GOVERNMENT to enforce our preferences, it won't be long until some view that you or I hold will be under the eye of government as well.

My daughter loves vegetables and pretty much everything else I put in front of her at dinner time. (eggs are the only exception, she doesn't really like them much unless they are on a sandwich) however, when I went to pick up my two older step children at their friend's house, his mother (who is black) wanted to hold my daughter (who was a few months old at the time). My kid threw a screaming fit, is she racist? No, she had just never encountered a person with such dark skin and being a baby, she couldn't understand why this person was so dark. Just because a kid eats something or doesn't eat something doesn't mean anything. Also, she has gotten much better about people of any color now that she is older and has had more encounters with them.

Warning that failing to pick children up on their racist attitudes could instil prejudice, the NCB adds that if children "reveal negative attitudes, the lack of censure may indicate to the child that there is nothing unacceptable about such attitudes".
What are we creating robots now. Let kids be, they'll learn as they go. You can't live your child's life for them.

Here's a thought: Instead of pointing out the things they do "bad" how about we encourage them when they do "good" instead.
